A New Perspective on Public Speaking: What I Learned from the Presentations I’ll be honest—I walked into this unit on public speaking expecting to sit through a bunch of information I’d already heard before. You know, the usual: “Make eye contact, don’t say ‘um’ too much, practice makes perfect.” But as the presentations went on, I was surprised by how practical and relevant the advice actually was. I found myself genuinely engaged and even excited to apply what I learned in the real world. Dress the Part, Feel the Part One of the biggest surprises for me was just how important appearance is when it comes to delivering a speech. I always assumed people cared more about what you say than what you wear—but now I realize that dressing professionally sets the tone before you even open your mouth. It shows that you respect your audience and take the speech seriously. Especially with online presentations, looking polished on camera helps keep the attention on you instead of on distractions a...

Public Speaking Foundations: Lessons from My Classmates’ Presentations Last Thursday, my classmates delivered their first presentations in my SP2608 course, and I was genuinely impressed by their performance. Despite having just one class, and a short amount of time to prepare for it, they showed strong presentation skills and professionalism. Even when faced with unexpected challenges, they demonstrated adaptability and confidence.   Each of the four groups introduced foundational concepts in public speaking. Group 1: Getting Started The first group discussed the fundamentals of communication and public speaking. It began by emphasizing the importance of public speaking as a crucial life skill that enhances both personal and professional development. A strong speech is built upon knowing the audience, having a clear purpose, and ensuring responsibility in delivering the message. Managing speech anxiety is key to effective delivery, with preparation playing a cruci...

Seeing Speech Differently: A Reflection on the Presentations                                   Whether you’re preparing for a class speech, a job interview, or just learning to express yourself more clearly, one thing is certain: the way a message is planned and delivered can change how it’s received. The Matt Abrahams video sets the tone by showing how to stay calm, think clearly, and speak with confidence—even under pressure.   Public speaking is something most people have to deal with at some point, and these presentations helped break down the process step by step.. It had initially seemed like it might just be going over material from the book, but each group taught something new. Each person approached presenting the topic of public speaking in a unique way, and the mix of visuals, definitions, and even a joke really pulled it together. Rather than merely going thro...
